Neighbours' Day in a few words
Every European city is faced with growing social indifference and a lack of solidarity among its citizens. Now worldwide communications seem easier than having a chat with your neighbours down the hall or across the street. This annual event will take place on the same day throughout Europe, aims at a European “union of hearts and minds”, at a more open, social and friendly society not only in towns, but also in cities and countries all gathered over a common project all over the European Union.
Over the last fifteen years, thousands of cities, housing associations and charities, some in partnership with their local councils, have celebrated Neighbours' Day, a day when people are encouraged to bond with their neighbours.
The initiative, originally set up in Paris in 1999, aims to foster community cohesion and create better neighbourhoods where people enjoy living. Across Europe and now even further around the world, over 30 million people celebrate the day every year.
